After Piotr Mleczko’s death, the Polish Cultural Institute organized a retrospective exhibition of 46 of his paintings, which included those we had already bought (see catalogue numbers 95.03 to 95.09) at their London premises at 34, Portland Place. We bought ‘Knights of the Road’, ‘Autumn Roses’ and ‘Ascot Hat’ at the exhibition from Eva Wnek-Webb who had organized the event on behalf of his widow Ann. We kept in touch with Eva, and a year later we bought ‘Game of Chess’. These four paintings were produced in the latter years of his life, and they are both moving and disturbing works.

We bought this picture from the Association of Polish Artists (Mrs Eva Wnek-Webb) in 2003, with whom we had kept in touch since buying 11 of Piotr’s paintings at the exhibition organized by the Association shortly after his death in 1995. Those who know about the 1960’s, when this picture was painted, will know about the song written by Paul McCartney (of Beatles fame), called ‘The Fool on the Hill”, in which the repeat verse is:-
‘But the Fool on the Hill,
sees the sun going down
and the eyes in his head
see the world spinning round’
The whole song is about a man who is considered a fool by others, but who is in fact not so – this picture is maybe a comment by the artist on his own view of himself.

After Piotr Mleczko’s death, the Polish Cultural Institute organized a retrospective exhibition of 46 of his paintings, which included those we had already bought (see catalogue numbers 95.03 to 95.09) at their London premises at 34, Portland Place. We bought ‘Knights of the Road’, ‘Autumn Roses’ and ‘Ascot Hat’ at the exhibition from Eva Wnek-Webb who had organized the event on behalf of his widow Ann. We kept in touch with Eva, and a year later we bought ‘Game of Chess’. These four paintings were produced in the latter years of his life, and they are both moving and disturbing works.

Después de la muerte de Piotr Mleczko, el Instituto Cultural Polaco organizó una exposición retrospectiva de 46 de sus pinturas, que incluía las que ya habíamos comprado (ver los números de catálogo 95.03 a 95.09) en sus instalaciones de Londres, en Portland Place 34. Compramos "Caballeros de la carretera", "Rosas de otoño" y "Sombrero de Ascot" en la exposición de Eva Wnek-Webb, quien había organizado el evento en nombre de su viuda Ann. Nos mantuvimos en contacto con Eva y, un año después, compramos "Juego de ajedrez". Estas cuatro pinturas fueron producidas en los últimos años de su vida, y son obras conmovedoras e inquietantes.
